24. 조동사 과거(would/could) & ~을 할 수 있었어(was able to/managed to)

정리) 

✔ could & would 는 조동사이므로 본동사 없이는 의미 가지지 못함
✔ 조동사는 시제 변화가 있을 수가 없음( should, ,might 다 마찬가지)
✔ couldn't : ~을 할 수 없었다. (can의 과거형)

 

1.  Could &  Would 

✔ can, will 의 과거형 X
✔ 다른 과거 동사와 같이 쓰여야함
✔ 과거 시점에서 바라보는 미래
     Ex) I thought it would rain today
         과거에서 오늘 비가 올거라고 생각했음 → would 사용

 

2.  '~을 할 수 있었어' 표현법 

1. was able to
     Ex) I was able to get up early yesterday
2. managed to
     Ex) I managed to get up early yesterday

 

3. 과거와 조동사 과거형의 차이

Ex1) I thought you would know about that
      난 너가 그거에 대해 알 줄 알았어
      I thought you knew about that
      난 너가 그거에 대해서 아는줄 알았어 → already와 어울림
Ex2) I thought this would be more expensive
      난 이게 더 비쌀 줄 알았어
      I thought this was more expensive
      난 이게 더 비싼 줄 알았어

 

4. Know & Think

제 시간에 도착 못할 줄 알았어
(1) 못할 줄 알았으나 함
✔ think(thought) : 실제 결과와는 반대를 예상했다는 의미
  → I didn't think I could make it on time
(2) 실제로 도착 못함  (예상대로)
✔ know(knew): 이미 예상했던 결과라는 것 의미
   I knew I couldn't arrive(make it) on time

 

5. would & could 단독적으로 사용할 때

✔ I could ~
: ~을 할 수도 있다 (can의 불확실한 버전,  현재 or 미래 얘기)
Ex) I could marry her, but I think I need to think about it some more
✔ I would ~
: wil의 불확실한 버전 , if조건절이랑 많이 사용 → 확신할 수 없기 때문
Ex) If you were my friend, I would help you  → 친구인지 아닌지 확실히 모름

      ✔ 실제로 도착 못한경우 (예상대로)
      ✔ 못할 줄 알았으나 도착한 경우
(13) 난 그녀랑 결혼 할 수도 있지만 좀 더 생각을 해봐야 할 거 같애
(14) 너가 내 친구였다면 내가 도와줄거야
